PharMEDium's label designs are a result of an extensive survey of medication errors in the hospital setting including the labor and delivery unit. PharMEDium leads the outsourced compounding market in the development of unique features designed to draw attention to the most important information on each preparation label.
All epidural medications feature a unique patented statement and utilize industry standardized color components (yellow) to facilitate "right route" of administration. Color blocked labels for both Magnesium Sulfate (red) and Oxytocin (green) were designed to differentiate between these two high risk medications commonly administered in this care setting. The strategic use of shapes, reverse print and TALLman lettering provide additional differentiation for the various concentrations of these drugs.
Our goal is to provide the most striking labels possible for all high risk drugs compounded for use in the labor and delivery suite.
One study of obstetrical accidents involving intravenous magnesium sulfate recommends the use of special labeling including “color coded” labels to reduce the potential for a medication error. In addition, the study cites specific recommendations by the Institutes of Medicine (IOM) to utilize premixed medications to reduce the potential for an error in the preparation process.1
